Autumn vibes & recommendations

My art stack made during Good Ship Illustration’s Art Club. It’s fast, fun and free.

It’s autumn at last. The summer was great, but one drawback is that my regular life drawing session which I’ve been going to for years now, is closed for the break. Sob. But it’s back now and I can draw big again. Hoorah! I LOVE to draw big. This week my paper wasn’t big enough, so I tacked on another piece and kept going. (See pic below).

To fill the gap over the summer I followed the free replays of the Good Ship Illustration’s Art Club on Youtube which, now that I’ve done several of them, massively outstripped my expectations.

When I look back on what I’ve made, I created quite a chunky & satisfying pile of drawings. It’s actual fun: I was laughing to the point of hysterics when I did ‘Upside-down Portrait Week’. What was so funny? Well, you sit in front of a mirror and draw your face but upside-down. What?! Breaks your brain in a good way.

The format is great: you can’t help but draw loose as it’s a series of short, timed exercises. That magic time limit also keeps you focused … this is the secret ingredient that improves your work. The sessions are run by professional illustrators Katie, Helen & Tania and you draw-along with them, so you get to see their lovely work ‘live’. I’m a total convert and have added it to my weekly schedule.

I also recommend their podcast: it’s real-world industry knowledge, moral support and laughs. I’m part of their Illustration Business Club which isn’t free but worth every penny. It’s lifetime access and you get a massive discount on your Adobe subscription which made it a no-brainer for me. The Good Ship ladies seem to have seeped right into my illustration practice!

This week at life drawing my paper was too small (left) so I tacked on an extra piece (right) with masking tape and kept going.
