Digital distraction

I really enjoyed making this illustration. I started with a simple concept: two friends sitting in a bar, one of them looking at her phone instead of listening and engaging. It’s a nice idea which I can’t really fault. But I find all ideas can be pushed/exaggerated to good effect, so I upped the stakes. I changed the ages of the women and their relationship to one another, added an embrace and put them in a setting which would dramatise the digital distraction. Looking at your phone while meeting your relative at the airport was the answer.

Thinking about colour, I wanted a very limited palette. I started with that lovely electric blue/green and knew I wanted a good orange complement. I punched the blue/green hex code into Adobe’s colour palette generator and it created a good orange for me. Time saver!
