Hatching a plan
Logo for the Oak Apple
I’ve been working on the branding for my new Substack page. Being both a writer and an illustrator/designer, it’s the perfect place to spread my wings.
My newsletter is called ‘The Oak Apple’.
What’s in the name?
Historically, oak apples were the core ingredient of ink in Europe.
An oak apple is not actually a fruit but a little orb that forms when a gall wasp lays an egg on the leaf bud of an oak. This protects her grub as it grows and when it’s ready, it burrows out and flies away. The hard shell, which by the way causes no harm to the tree, falls to the ground and can be collected to make ink.
As ink is used for both writing and drawing, I like the idea of joining my two disciplines in this way. I’ll be posting fiction, poetry, drawings and interesting museum-y things that have caught my attention.
The page will be ready in the next week or so. I’ll post a link here when it’s up. If it’s to your taste, it’d be great if you’d subscribe.
But what about this website?
This portfolio website will continue as usual and I’d imagine there will be some new and productive cross-fertilisation between Substack and here.
