Setting goals and being strategic

I’m writing this post on a quiet Thursday afternoon in the studio. I’ve been working on a client project today and needed a little brain break so I thought I’d come here.

Since starting this blog, I’ve been considering either being strategic about what I write or just ‘going with the flow’. Part of me baulks at the idea of not having a plan, it seems too wishy-washy. But, I also like to challenge myself, so I started typing to see what came out and then decided to refine and edit as I go. (I did the same yesterday when I decided to spend my practice session painting onions of all things.)

Something about this process reminds me of playing solo as a child. Do you remember how that felt? Learning to skip, or scoot your scooter on a stretch of concrete with no one else around. When you’re a little kid, adult notions of being strategic are non-existent. Sure, you’re trying to get a little better at the thing but that’s about as loaded as it gets. I realise there’s real freedom in that, a freedom that comes from the total absence of an endgame.
