The quicker, the better

Keeping up with tech

Every creative project I take on whether from a client brief, a class project or a personal challenge always takes longer than I expect. I know this is a very common problem.

But when you look closely at that kind of thinking, it isn’t logical at all. Perhaps it’d be more honest to say that things take longer than I GUESS they will. When I think that instead, I instantly get some relief…

I’ve been working on this little animation for a couple of days, interspersing it with client work and writing. A couple of posts ago, I mentioned I’m working in new (to me) software - Adobe Fresco. I’m an old hand with Adobe’s other design software and although there are many crossovers it is, in effect, a new instrument. So why did I spend any time thinking the process should be quicker if I’d no previous experience?

Maybe even more to the point, why was I thinking that quicker would be better? (It fascinates me that at some level, we all want things to ‘hurry up’.) I’m pleased how it turned out, it did what I wanted it to and the fretting proved irrelevant.

So, lesson learned (again) this week. Stay present, keep working, don’t fuss.

*** By the way, if you want to learn Adobe Fresco too, Skillshare is my go-to. My fave teacher is Chris Piascik, but there are plenty of other great ones if he’s not your style. (As an aside, I also love Ohn Mar Win’s watercolour classes... ooh, watercolour…). Here’s a link for a free month.
