This portrait of Margaret Okwanga, cook and caterer, is part of a group of illustrations for London Transport Museum, used in a game about female role models who’ve worked for London Transport over the years.

It’s bank holiday Monday in the UK and here I am, at the studio, quickly updating my website while I have a few spare hours. As this is a blog about creative practice, it occurred to me that what I’m doing right now IS part of creative practice. While other people are out having fun or relaxing, I’m often at my computer or sitting with a notebook, pen in hand.

Creative practice relies on our willingness to work outside office hours on things that may only offer long-term rewards

Now, I don’t want this to sound like a downer because what I’m doing does bring satisfaction (not always in the moment, but I know I’ll feel great later tonight) but it probably doesn’t constitute what most people would call ‘fun’.

The upshot is that having a creative practice for most of us relies on our willingness to work outside of office hours on things that may only offer long-term rewards. In the short-term that means sacrificing some fun and relaxation and missing bank holiday. For me that’s not a bad thing obviously but I thought I should put it out there.
